The battle of London's newly-promoted sides ended in a comprehensive defeat for Palace at Loftus Road on Saturday, writes Neil McSteen.

Despite occupying a place in the Premiership, it was Coca-Cola Championship new boys QPR who dominated and deserved their win with three well taken goals.

QPR got off to the brighter start with Martin Rowland testing keeper Julian Speroni early on.

Palace were denied the opportunity to go in front when Andy Johnson was bought down by debutant keeper Jake Cole.

Referee Steve Tomlin decided against awarding the penalty, later admitting he should have pointed to the spot.

But it was the homeside who finished the half stronger, and Tony Thorpe scored right on half-time.

After the break Palace made the brighter start, when Aki Riihilahti leaped unmarked to head a Butterfield cross against the upright.

The revival was curtailed in spectacular fashion by former Watford and Chelsea striker Paul Furlong in the 54th minute who nipped in and volleyed past the stranded Palace keeper.

Palace's misery was completed five minutes from time when Kevin Gallen tucked home the third at the near post after a low cross from Kevin McLeod.
