South Norwood High Street is closed for 12 weeks.
The road, which has been closed since Monday, will remain so while gas works are carried out between its junction with Norwood Hill and the Goat House Bridge.
Maintenance to the road, which is expected to re-open to traffic in October, will be carried out at the same time.
