It's been a bumper fundraising weekend for the Gannon family but thousands of pounds are still needed to pay for the operation Michael needs to ensure he is not paralysed.

Seven-year-old Michael, from Kempton Walk, Shirley, has a condition called chiari malformation, a blockage at the base of the brain stem and top of the spinal cord.

He has already undergone three operations, the last one lasting almost nine hours, to try and correct his condition.

But now the Orchard Way Primary School pupil faces a fourth operation at a specialist hospital in America. Without surgery Michael's parents, Tony Gannon and Jackie Wischhusen, fear he may be paralysed.

They have launched a £30,000 appeal, supported by the Guardian, to raise the money.

On Sunday the family had a stall at the Kingswood Festival in Dulwich on Sunday to promote the appeal and awareness of Michael's condition.

Jackie said: "It was a really good day. We had some stocks set up and people were throwing wet sponges at Tony.

"We raised £195 on the day."

The appeal received an added boost with a £210 donation from Pyramid hairdressers in Thornton Heath, raised from the proceeds of a raffle and pledges of support from customers.

And one of Michael's relatives donated £5,000 to the fund, bringing the appeal total to almost £11,000.
