A three-disc anthology of the late Croydon singer-songwriter Kirsty MacColl will also raise vital funds for the campaign seeking justice over the musician's untimely death.

A week after it was revealed that the inquiry into her death could be reopened in Mexico following the emergence of new evidence, the record company EMI has announced it will release the box set of her recordings on October 11.

Immortalising her roots with the borough, the anthology is called From Croydon to Cuba and will track her career from her debut 1979 single They Don't Know to songs recorded just before her death in December 2000.

It will also include rare tracks, several unreleased songs as well as demo recordings.

A percentage of proceeds made from the box set will go towards her family and friends' ongoing fight to bring those responsible for her death to justice.

The 41-year-old singer was killed by a speedboat propeller while scuba diving in a national park off the coast of Cozumel island in Mexico. Her sons Jamie and Louis witnessed the accident.

Deckhand Juan Jose Cem Yam was found guilty of culpable homicide and fined £61 by a Mexican court last year.

Now new evidence has come to light which casts doubt over who was driving the boat at the time of the accident.

Private investigators hired by the singer's mother, Jean MacColl, hope the information will lead federal prosecutors to reopen the case.

A documentary, titled Justice for Kirsty, will feature at the Edinburgh Television Festival later this month before it is screened on BBC4 this autumn.

Born at Mayday Hospital on October 10, 1959, Ms MacColl had a string of hits in the 1980s with tracks including a version of the Kinks' single Days.

She was best known for her 1987 Christmas hit with The Pogues, Fairytale of New York, which reached number two in the charts.

Nigel Reeve from EMI, who is co-ordinating the project, said: "The reason why we have been involved with the project for the last 15 months is because it is about time Kirsty had the credit she is due. It was about time someone did something about it.

"There is a DVD planned for release as well of Kirsty's singles, also titled From Croydon To Cuba, which will accompany the box set.

"We are planning to go with a release date of October 11, the day after what would have been her birthday. We are working very closely with Kirsty's estate and family on the project."
