At least 350 potholes in Sutton’s roads have now been repaired after the freezing temperatures in January.

At the start of 2010, Sutton Council announced an additional £500,000 to help repair roads damaged by the snow.

So far, £100,000 has been used to fix damaged roads and a further £150,000 is expected to be spent by the end of this month.

This money is on top of the annual budget of about £3m to fix potholes and repair and protect the highways.

While more than 1,000 individual repairs are needed in Sutton’s roads, following extensive damage by frost and snow, a third of these have already been completely fixed.

Council leader Sean Brennan said: “The repairs team are doing an excellent job fixing a mountain of mole hills left by the freezing temperatures.

“There is still work to be done and I thank residents for their patience while roads are closed or routes diverted so repairs can be take place.

“I would also like to thank everyone who has reported potholes to us.”

The council has stated that all main roads have been inspected for cracks and cavities and problems have been addressed quickly.

All reported potholes are temporarily filled-in within 24 hours before a full repair can take place.

As the council is required to give utility companies three months’ notice of road resurfacing, so they do not dig up new tarmac, such large scale jobs will begin in May.

A full list of planned road closures will be posted on the council’s website and residents whose roads are to be resurfaced will receive a leaflet with further details.
