The York Road Estate is set for a £23m revamp after the council approved outline plans for a major refurbishment programme.

There are 614 homes on the Battersea estate, split between seven blocks.

The renovation plans include new double glazed windows, new roofs and each block would be overcald to improve insulation and cut resident's heating bills.

Security would be boosted with new lighting and CCTV, plus upgraded entrycall systems for main entrance doors.

A series of environmental improvements would take place across the estate and communal areas, such as landings and foyers, would be smartened up.

The scheme will be subject to a full consultation with the estate's residents who will help develop the outline plans into a full scope of works.

The current proposals would take five years to complete with construction work split into three phases.

Depending on the outcome of the consultation, the first phase could start next year.

Wandsworth's housing spokesman Martin D Johnson said: "This scheme would make the York Road Estate a safer and a much more attractive place to live. Hundreds of homes would be warmer, more energy efficient and the estate's carbon footprint would be radically reduced.

"We are constantly investing in our housing stock which is why it passed the Government’s Decent Homes Standards four years ahead of the original deadline.

“In total we're planning to spend £81million upgrading homes over the next three years to ensure we stays well ahead of national guidelines."
