Calls for the fun fair to be dropped from this year's Lambeth Country Show have been rejected by both the council and police.

Chuka Umunna, Labour's parliamentary candidate for Streatham, called for the fun fair to be dropped because of the violence he witnessed at the event last year.

He said: "Having heard the concerns of local parents, I feel we have to act to make sure this year's event is safe for all concerned.

"The fun fair has acted as a magnet for trouble and removing it makes sense in my view."

However a council spokesman confirmed the fun fair would still be going ahead.

He said: "We take the planning and delivery of the Lambeth Country Show very seriously and work closely with the Metropolitan Police, other emergency services and organisations across the community to ensure we deliver a successful and safe event.

"It’s important to say that the Country Show is enjoyed by thousands of people every year, and it’s only a very small number who behave in a way which is unacceptable."

Acting Superintendent Suzanne Wallace at Lambeth police said: "The fun fair is set up periodically throughout the year in Lambeth and does not attract violence.

"The Lambeth Country Show is a family orientated event which Lambeth borough Met Police have a policing plan for."
