By Community Correspondent Isabelle Kerr This year eight girls from the Ursuline High School, accompanied by twenty Wimbledon College boys, will travel thousands of miles to the rejected village of Pannur, in Southern India. Whilst out there, the students will help to build a secondary school for the children and rebuild the local village which suffered tremendous physical damage in recent flooding before Christmas.

Each student must raise around £2000 to help pay for the trip and the building work carried out and as it is a charity trip – fundraising is a perfect way to bond, appreciate the work we’ll be doing in India and of course minimise the daunting costs of the trip.

Most people would think a car wash or cake sale, but we needed something big and attention grabbing for maximum sponsorship. Naturally, doing an entire tour of all the places on the monopoly board sprung to mind.

No old boots, dogs or thimbles – we were the pieces and the board suddenly became a whole lot bigger. Starting at 9am on the dot (not an easy task when you’re a teenager on half term) we headed up to central London to hit the most famous roads from Oxford Street to Trafalgar Square. We followed our map religiously which proved successful as there were only a few minor hiccups in our route, ignoring the fact we got on the wrong bus in the wrong direction.

We finished our trip at Pentonville Road; not an easy job in the height of rush hour and having walked tirelessly around London to pose for pictures. Ten hours later and we had done it – a tiring journey, some funny looks from posing next to the Old Kent Road sign, but having raised around £200 each, it was definitely a worthwhile experience.
