The mother of beaten footballer Robbie Hughes will take her campaign to help British victims of crime to the Greek ambassador Arsteidis Sandis.

Maggie Hughes, from Wallington, will present her Victims of Crime Abroad to Mr Sandis about how the Greek authorities can help holidaymakers.

The meeting comes after a national conference last December, which drew together senior politicians and victims from across the country, and which mapped out proposals for the Foreign Office and other authorities.

Mrs Hughes began the campaign after finding crucial FCO support unavailable in the aftermath of a savage attack on her son Robbie, a former Croydon Athletic and Sutton United player.

Mr Brake said: “Although the conference didn’t intend focusing on the Greek authorities, most of the complaints were about incidents that happened in Greece.

“I welcome therefore the willingness of the Greek Ambassador to sit down with us and discuss ways in which the Greek authorities could provide more help to British families when a serious incident occurs in Greece.”

The report makes several recommendations to the Greek authorities, which include: ensuring that all crimes are reported and investigated, working with the UK Embassy to make sure that UK tourists have detailed and accurate information about their destination, providing a more appropriate level of resources for severe cases.

It also receommends to stop sending police cadets into areas where more senior officers are needed and working with the UK Government on the issue of the licensing of door staff and the selling of alcohol to under-age drinkers and those already over the limit Mr Brake said he was also seeking a meeting with ABTA – The Travel Association to discuss recommendations in the report directed at tour operators.

Mrs Hughes said: “What we are saying is that Greece is a beautiful place and we don’t want to affect their tourism revenue, but this is a chance to make the streets safer and helping people who do find themselves a victim abroad.”
