A couple who fell in love while serving in the Army during World War 2 are due to celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary.

Lyndon, 84, and Doreen Weight, 85, from Stoneleigh, met when Mrs Weight was 12 because he was friends with her brother.

During the war, Mr Weight was with the Coldstream Guards, 3rd Battalion, and his wife with the Land Army, and their relationship flourished as they met using 48-hour passes from their regiments.

Mr Weight said: “While we were both serving I took her to a dance and that’s where it all started. The problem was we could only see each other when she was on leave.

"Later on, I was in the Middle East and came back to work for an American company and I hardly ever saw her.

"So I said ‘look, if we don’t get married, we will never see each other’. So we got married in 1950.”

The couple had three children, John, 57, David, 54, and Anne McDonnell, 50, and moved to Stoneleigh, where they’ve been living for the past 52 years.

Mrs McDonnell said: “They are a lovely couple. My mum is a great friend and used to be very active. She’s done a lot of things in the community.”

In 2003, Mrs Weight suffered irreversible damage to her central nervous system and is currently suffering with poor health. But the couple will still celebrate the anniversary on March 25 with a buffet for family and friends.

A decade ago, when they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, a picture of the happy couple was published in the Epsom Guardian.

Mr Weight said: “Back then I never thought we were going to celebrate our 60th anniversary and here we are. How we stayed together for this long, I don’t know. I guess we just got on.”
