A law student who stabbed another man during a botched drug deal has been jailed for grievous bodily harm.

Alvin Osinde, 21, of Bushey Road, was cleared of attempted murder but convicted of GBH with intent at the Old Bailey on January 21.

Today he was sentenced for 10 years in jail, minus the 269 days he has already served in custody.

On May 14 last year, 20-year-old Daniel Mandalia had pre-arranged to buy some cannabis from the defendant at the corner of Lenham Road and Manor Lane in Sutton.

Once in the back of the defendant’s Volkswagon Polo, he realised he had been set up to be robbed and was punched repeatedly before being stabbed in the back.

The victim, who managed to stumble 100 metres to his sister’s home nearby, was found heavily bleeding by police officers and although barely conscious was able to name his attacker.

Clothes, spattered with the victim’s blood, were subsequently found during a routine search of Osinde’s flat.

In January, jurors at the Old Bailey heard the victim had been stabbed in the back, had another knife wound in his chest and, according to police, was lucky to be alive.

The knife had punctured his lung and missed his heart by no more than an inch.

Part of Osinde’s defence was that he had stabbed the man in self-defence, using the victim’s knife. He also claimed he had been the intended victim of the robbery.

Superintendent Chas Bailey said: “We will not tolerate the carrying of knives in Sutton.

“Anyone who commits an offence using a knife can expect a thorough and robust investigation and perpetrators will be charged and put before the courts.”
