Icy roads, treacherous conditions, snow and sleet have plagued our streets throughout January. Unprecedented amounts of snow fell upon our under prepared streets causing deadly walking and driving conditions, causing many to stay home after Met Office warnings ‘to travel only if it is necessary’. As the mountains of snow began to thaw and the temperature began to rise, pavements and roads were cleared leaving thin layers of ice often more challenging than snow.

Unfortunately beneath the snow and ice, roads began to crack and potholes appeared. Water seeps into the asphalt through common cracks cause my traffic and when the temperature falls the water freezes and thus expands causing the surface to crack and tear. These cracks turn into potholes after the pressure from traffic and regrettably the cost to repair these potholes is astounding. One Local Resident expressed their concern ‘The roads near where I live were pretty bad before the snow, but now some parts have become ridiculous’. Many drivers are concern about the damage which may be done to their cars.

Although at the moment potholes are common most councils are making every effort to restore the roads to their former glory. Soon our roads shall be once again pothole free.
