By Community Correspondent Aliza Catlin For some a trip to the park may not be as simple and pleasant as it sounds. Dogs are a common visitor to many of Sutton’s parks and they are not welcomed by everyone as for some they can cause them fear and even terror. Many dog owners would argue that dogs have as much right to walk freely around the park as humans. Others believe that dogs are a danger to people and that they are should be kept on leads at all times. One of the factors that have caused such beliefs is stories in the news of dog attacks on humans and other dogs. Also, stories of dogs being used as weapons have caused unrest for the public. The sight of a dog running towards people may cause them to turn the other way. Most dogs are well trained and friendly in their behaviour, but some cause problems for these friendly dogs. Repeat offenders may cause people to stay away from certain areas.

But would rules on dogs change this?

If all dogs are kept on leads then the problem would be solved. But is this fair? Another solution would be to put problem dogs on leads; if their owners do not comply then they could face fines. Whatever your opinion is on dogs and whether they should be allowed to roam free, questions will continue to be asked on how dangerous is man’s best friend.
