The country was shocked two weeks ago when a thick layer of white snow fell up to 20cm. Over 1,500 schools were shut for up to a week in some places in the South East alone and thousands of people were left snowed in and unable to get out of there house. Motorways and roads became dangerous to drive on and public transport was not running. After the ‘Big Freeze’ that week the government realized that we needed more grit and salt so that the roads were fine to drive on , and schools and work could be reopened. Now the words on everyone’s lips are if the ‘Big Freeze’ shall return? Scotland has already received more snow this week however not nearly as much as 2 weeks ago. The South East also woke up on the 1st February to a very thin dusting of snow on the pavements. The Met office has said that there is a possibility that the snow could return as the weather has been very cold recently, however they hope it warms up. The government have now promised to store more grit in case the snow returns and the country becomes stuck again however they also said that the problem with the grit two weeks ago wasn’t that the country hadn’t stored enough, but that each county hadn’t got enough grit as some had a lot more snow than others and used the grit up quicker. Will it happen again? It is unlikely that we will have that much snow again, however there is a very small possibility. All we need to know for now is to wrap up warm the cold weather that we are having at the moment!
