By Community Correspondent Aliza Catlin Walking around Sutton you will probably have noticed a topic that makes many people’s blood boil. Litter: wherever you are you will see it. It may not be a reflection on the area but it is on the people who live there. Litter is a problem that nobody wants to face. Most are guilty of dropping something but not many want to face up to the reality of the situation: “One piece won’t hurt”. But the trouble is that one piece of litter is your contribution to the problem. If everyone in Britain dropped just one piece of litter then that’s 61 million pieces! A scary thought for many. Most litter bugs do not consider the consequences of their actions. The impact on the environment, especially on animals is great. Especially animals getting caught in pieces of litter and cutting or injuring themselves. Or getting trapped and being unable to free themselves. Unfortunately many people do not see this; if they did they may think twice about dropping the litter. Many would argue that the Earth is our home. You wouldn’t normally drop litter in your home, so why do it on the streets? Other people blame the rubbish collectors and road sweepers. But Sutton has a dedicated team who have to deal with the problem of litter everyday and it is not just this area that is affected. Large amounts of local councils face the same problem. So next time you think about dropping a piece of litter, you may want to consider the effect on other humans, other species and the Earth!
