A Kingston peace campaigner, who was the first protester to arrive outside the Iraq inquiry when Tony Blair gave evidence last Friday, has questioned the former Prime Minister’s competence.

Noel Hamel, chairman of Kingston Peace Council, arrived outside the Queen Elizabeth II conference centre at 7am, and was joined by local MPs Susan Kramer and Edward Davey during the day.

He said: “It was very jolly despite the cold weather. It was also sombre when we had some speeches and a reading of some of the names of the dead.

“My feeling was not that he is a criminal but of dubious mental competence. At the end when he was invited to give his expression to those who died he said ‘Oh, no’.

“We stayed there until about 6.30pm when the police stood down and we realised that our quarry had scarpered. A number of us went down to the back so we do not know which entrance he went from. We wanted him to notice there was some opposition.”
