A&E or maternity services at one of the two hospitals serving Wandsworth, St George’s and Kingston, could face the axe, according to a leaked report.

Edward Davey, Kingston and Surbiton MP, and Susan Kramer, Richmond Park MP, were told by senior managers within the NHS that a review of hospitals across south-west London had concluded that only three of four hospitals should have either a maternity unit or an A&E.

The review’s findings were due to be published after the general election, prompting the MPs to go public.

Ian Hart, chairman of Wandsworth Council’s health and overview scrutiny committee, said he was aware of the report but no conclusions had been drawn.

He said he thought it “unlikely” any services at St George’s would go, but it was too early to tell.

The review has been looking at St George’s, Tooting, May Day, Croydon, St Helier, Carshalton, and Kingston Hospital.

In north-east London a similar review has put services at Whittington and North Middlesex Hospital under threat.
