Crystal Palace captain Shaun Derry heaped praise upon the club's supporters after their vital victory against bottom club Peterborough at the weekend.

15,000 faithful fans welcomed the players to the pitch with a rapturous chorus of songs, banners and balloons and their efforts were not in vain as two Neil Danns goals were enough to secure the Eagles all three points and Derry was quick to highlight their impact.

“It was like a carnival atmosphere out there and the fans are going to be so important for us for the rest of the season," he said.

“I’m just so delighted for the club after such a terrible week, as everyone knows after it has been well documented what has gone on.

“Everybody says how bad it must be for the players but the fans are going to be here longer than us and it is terrible that the club has got to go through administration again “I thought it was a brilliant performance we knew the importance of the game and I thought that was just what the club needed really.

“Deep down we all knew that whatever the performance was going to be like we needed the three points desperately which we got.”

Victor Moses was forbidden from featuring ahead of his move to Wigan Athletic, confirmed by the club this morning, and a number of other players are set to join him out of the door at Selhurst Park.

Match winner Danns and midfield partner Darren Ambrose have been included in those rumours and Derry had nothing but adulation for the pair.

“We know what Danns is capable of and I though both goals were really special," he said.

“Even though the first goal didn’t touch the ground until it hit the back of the net I thought it was a really well worked goal and Danns' run into the box was brilliant.

“What pleased me more than anything was the second goal because I thought Ambrose’s pass was sensational..

“It was a pass from a player with Premiership capabilities and he has shown throughout the season what an important player he is for us.

“They were brilliant today as were all the boys coming off such a bad week, we had to galvanise ourselves for the game and I thought that was exactly what we did.”

The news of the point deduction from the Football League didn’t reach the player’s until they had landed in Newcastle and although Palace’s season has been turned upside down Derry is determined to keep optimistic through the tough times.

“We have a different emphasis on what we want to achieve now," he said.

“It was strange getting on the plane looking at that the top six and then we got off looking at the bottom three and you think to yourself you have dropped 11 places in 50 minutes.

“There is definitely a different outlook on the season now but we don’t think of ourselves as a bottom four side because it is out of our hands what has happened.

“Every cloud has a silver lining so we just have to hope this administration comes out that way."
