A 50-year-old man died from smoke inhalation after being rescued from a flat fire in Ely Road on Saturday night.

Firefighters rescued the man from the flat after they were called to the fire at 11:34pm.

He died later from his injuries in hospital.

The blaze in the ground floor, three-bedroom flat took under half an hour to put out with authorities estimating 5 per cent damage.

Three fire engines and 15 firefighters tackled the blaze.

Crews from Croydon and Norbury attended the incident.

The cause of the fire is under investigation although at this stage police do not believe it is suspicious.
