As wars raged on all over the world, Tooting residents held a candlelit vigil last Wednesday to pray for peace.

Priests from four faiths gathered with community leaders for the multi-faith peace ceremony at Tooting Broadway tube station.

Sikh, Muslim, Christian and Buddhist leaders expressed their hopes for the future while passers-by lit candles.

Tributes were paid to pensioner Ekram Haque, 67, who died after being attacked in Church Lane in September.

Organiser Kate Allan said: “There may have been some fears that it could have provoked some distrust, but actually it triggered a great reaching out and a tide of good will from all the different faiths and ethnic groups.

“Even when times are bad, people pull together.”

The event, organised by the Balham and Tooting Community Association (BATCA), aimed to celebrate solidarity in the area’s diverse community.
