Leatherhead 0 Godalming Town 2

Leatherhead were beaten for the second time in a week at Fetcham Grove with a lacklustre display against a well-organised Godalming Town.

Tanners boss Mick Sullivan was forced into making some strategic changes after Tommy Williams failed a fitness test.

Dominic O’Shea was moved back into the pivotal midfield position, with Tommy Hutchings joining Kev Terry in attack.

Leatherhead opened strongly and Godalming keeper Rodney Chiweshe had to be alert to make a save after two minutes as Hutchings got in some early shooting practice.

Terry did well to find Josh Smith with a well-directed cross from the right after 12 minutes, but Smith was unable to get any power into his shot and failed to test Chiweshe.

At the other end a well-orchestrated move from the G’s finished with Glen Stanley volleying a shot over the bar after 19 minutes.

Godalming took the lead after 29 minutes. Phil Williams worked his way down the left wing before lofting a high ball into the Leatherhead six yard box.

Graeme Purdy out jumped the Tanners defence to head the ball past Colin Harris and into the goal.

Leatherhead responded with a sense of urgency which took them into the visitors’ penalty area.

Hutchings squared the ball to Boulter who had two attempts to shoot before the ball was eventually scrambled away by the Gs defence.

Godalming had a chance to increase their lead before half time when Williams was put through on goal but Harris got down well to save at the striker’s feet.

Rico Morris, a new signing from Walton & Hersham, replaced Billy Joe King at the start of the second half.

A Morris corner after 51 minutes found Boulter in the visitors’ box but his shot was well saved by Chiweshe.

The Gs were unable to take full advantage of an indirect free-kick in the Tanners penalty area, after Harris had fumbled a throw out and then picked up the ball on the edge of the box.

But as the second half developed the Gs grew in confidence and launched a wave of attacks on the Tanners goal.

On 65 minutes, Williams burst into the box to receive an incoming ball but had his legs clipped by Leatherhead defender Michael Corbett.

The referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot and Stanley drove his penalty shot firmly into the back of the net.

Leatherhead rallied late in the match. Terry had a long-range shot well saved by Chiweshe in the dying minutes and their best chance of the match came in injury time when Morris blasted the ball high over the bar from six yards.

Leatherhead: Colin Harris, Jon Coke, Rob Hill, Chris Boulter, Michael Corbett, Dan Dean, Billy Joe King (Rico Morris), Dominic O’Shea, Tommy Hutchings, Kev Terry, Josh Smith (Greg Andrews).
