There’s no question that this series of The X Factor belongs to John and Edward Grimes. The focus of hoards of media attention, they or ‘Jedward’ continue to be a common talking point. In August they first hit our TV screens and received very mixed reactions. Of course, considering one of the first things they told us about themselves was that they were from Dublin, they immediately had one ‘yes’ in the bag from fellow Irishman and judge on the panel, Louis Walsh. But then the 17-year-old twins went on to charm the audience with their upbeat characters and ingenious humour – answering the question ‘Where do you see yourselves in 15 years?’ with the witty ‘Well, I see myself being older.’ Before they even began singing they went on crowd-pleasing with some more cringe worthy (but admittedly quite funny) banter. Eventually, they began their rendition of a Backstreet Boys classic but were cut off a few seconds in before being labelled “Not very good and incredibly annoying.” by Simon Cowell. However, this would not be the end of John and Edward.

Fast forward a few weeks and they’ve made it to the live shows - no one quite knows how, but they have already accumulated a number of hard core fans whilst also having to deal with extreme haters.

Over the next few weeks people get more and more surprised as the spiky-haired duo remain in the competition, being kept in each week by public votes. Their singing may be debatable, but their captivating performances give people something to look forward to every Saturday night and have won them an increasing number of fans. Popping up on our screens with new ‘Jedisms’, they creep up the betting ladder gaining better odds of winning each week. Their success so far encourages Simon to say that he would leave the country if they ended up winning the show. Maybe that is what made people continue to vote for them?

We’ve seen some hilarious and enthralling performances by now, including the boys’ version of the Britney Spears hit Oops, I Did It Again (with a surprising twist of them having a conversation in the middle) but nothing could prepare us for week 6. The electrifying performance of Queen’s Under Pressure, with a bit of Vanilla Ice’s Ice Ice Baby thrown in, is topped off with Calvin Harris rushing the stage with a pineapple on his head. Whilst this event is unplanned, the twins carry on singing, even putting their arm around Calvin, assuming it is part of the choreography. This amusing stunt fills even more magazine pages with the twins for the coming weeks. Jedmania is well underway.

And so we reach week 7. We’ve heard the words “I’m John.” “and I’m Edward.” several times by now but still haven’t got enough. After even the judges have admitted to them being their “guilty pleasure”, sadly their rendition of I’m Your Man isn’t good enough to keep them in for an eighth week. The endless random chatter that they come up with and their talking over each other is no longer going to entertain us each week. We have heard the last of their pet which “must be the world’s oldest budgie” and the last of their peculiar descriptions (remember a bike with broken brakes?). Their X Factor experience is over.

Their lives are only really just beginning. Offers are flocking in from all over; will they be the new favourite kids’ TV presenters? Will they release a successful single? No one knows, but we all hope they’ll do something original, outrageous and amusing to entertain us further. One of their first ventures is performing at a popular club in Kingston on the 28th November and we’ll have to see how things turn out from then...
