A man who assaulted two police officers outside a Sutton nightclub has been handed 100 hours community service.

Sam Dunkley, 22, of Browning Avenue, appeared at Sutton Magistrates’ Court on Friday after pleading guilty to assaulting two police officers.

He was also charged with threatening, abusive or insulting behaviour.

The court heard that Dunkley and his young brother were out drinking at Revolution nightclub in High Street, Sutton, on November 14.

Police were called to the club to deal with an incident, which resulted in them questioning Dunkley’s brother.

Dunkley took exception to this and shouted obscenities at officers who then told him on “numerous” occasions to be quiet.

However, the former plasterer, who was made redundant this year, continued to swear at them.

The court heard that it was at this point that PC Farmer and Sgt Barnes tried to arrest Dunkley, but the officers were assaulted when he resisted arrest and “kicked” out at them.

The court heard that Mr Dunkley’s conduct was “out of character” and that he had shown “considerable regret and remorse” when Interviewed at Sutton Police station.

Dunkley pleaded guilty to all three charges, adding his “sincerest apologies”, and was sentenced to 100 hours of community service and fined £140.

The incident takes the number of assaults on police officers this year to 16.

Superintendent Chas Bailey said: “We take assaults on our officers extremely seriously and we will not tolerate such behaviour.”
