The head of the controversial organisation managing Lambeth Council's housing stock left its biggest community engagement event of the year early - so she could play netball.

The move by Lambeth Living chief executive Cathy Deplessis, who commands a salary of more than £100,000, has enraged the many residents living in council properties who attended the Lambeth residents' conference.

They have questioned the priorities of Ms Deplessis - who has regularly preached the importance of improving customer relations between her staff and residents - by not staying for the entire of the flagship event at the Brit Oval, rumoured to have cost in the region of £25,000.

Ms Deplessis said the conference had run late, meaning it clashed with another commitment but that she would answer any questions raised at the event.

According to residents who attended, Ms Deplessis delivered her speech, then tried to leave straight away.

Tenants' council chair Ros Munday, who was chairing the conference, said she cancelled a scheduled coffee break to force Ms Deplessis to take questions.

The housing boss then left before the day's workshops, a panel question and answer session which she asked more junior officers to sit on, and a final meet and greet tea session involving the mayor - so she could attend the netball game.

Ms Munday said: "I was very disappointed that she left to play netball. I would have thought that the chance to engage with tenants and leaseholders would have taken priority."

Steve Rice, vice chair of leasehold council, said: "Given that resident participation is key to getting the money for decent homes, I think it is abhorrent that she left the conference, and more frightening that her board and the council let her."

Ms Deplessis said: "Unfortunately the conference started late and consequently the new arrangements meant it was not possible for me to stay as the re-arranged agenda clashed with a prior commitment I had.

“As residents clearly wanted to ask questions and were prepared to forego their break to hear from the speakers, I was happy to stay and answer questions at the end of the morning session.

She said she was happy to address any outstanding issues raised on the day.
