Residents are being tricked into giving away their bank details in a new phone scam.
According to Epsom and Ewell Council phone calls are being made to residents advising them their council tax banding has been changed and they are to receive rebates backdated to April 1, 1993.
The caller gives personal details such as birth dates and then asks for bank details, claiming that they can then make payments direct into the person’s account.
Anyone who receives a call of this nature is being advised not to give any details over the phone and to contact the police immediately on 0845 125 2222.
A spokeswoman for the council said: “The council does not notify residents of council tax changes by telephone. If there are any changes to your bill, you will receive adjustment information in writing through the post.”
Anyone concerned or wishing to confirm any changes to their council tax, should contact the council tax section on 01372 732000.
