Crystal Palace have hit back at criticism from fans and say stewards were right to throw out the supporters they did against Middlesbrough on Saturday.

A group of Eagles fans has launched a petition and plan to protest before the game against Watford on November 28 against what they saw as heavy-handed treatment from stewards and Police in the 1-1 draw.

They claimed seven fans were ejected but Palace say it was only four and that after reviewing CCTV footage backed the stewards' decision.

A statement on their website said: "After reviewing the CCTV footage at length, it unfortunately shows clear examples of obscene gestures, attempted incitement, persistent standing along with pushing, shoving and partial blocking of staircases by a minority of the crowd in certain sections of the Holmesdale Road stand.

"Faced with this evidence the club can only come to the conclusion that all of these activities constitute unacceptable behaviour that could endanger and/or negatively effect others.

"The vast majority of Crystal Palace supporters are upstanding citizens and appreciate that both the stewards and Police are there to ensure their safety.

"The club is disappointed that both the Police and stewards were forced into taking preventative measures at the game and despite warnings appearing to be given to many individuals, in terms of behaviour, the Police and stewards felt the need to remove four individuals from the stadium.

"This is especially disappointing after the club has successfully worked with supporters groups in safety group forums in the past to allow such items as drums and large flags to be brought in to the ground in a bid to create a better atmosphere, and therefore a better match day experience for all of our fans.

"We would also like to go on record to applaud and thank those fans for their support and commitment.

"At no time does the club want to be seen, or perceived to be, preventing fans from supporting their team in the most vocal and encouraging manner."
