Chipstead manager Mark Tompkins praised the character of his side on Saturday as two injury time goals gave them a 4-2 win over relegation rivals Eastbourne Town.

Chris Dicker's 90th minute free-kick looked to have rescued a point for Eastbourne but in three minutes of time added on new signing Sean Rivers dispatched a penalty on his debut and Ray Freeman scored his second of the game and Chipstead's fourth.

"When they got their second goal I thought here we go another two points dropped but the players responded straight away," he said.

"What we have been doing when we concede is going into our shell but we didn't do that on Saturday and we responded.

"It's a massive result and a proper six pointer."

Rivers and Freeman both scored twice in the game and Tompkins believes he has finally got his squad right.

"I knew from the first game of the season that the squad I had would change," he said.

"You have all these players that go to the likes of Sutton United and Carshalton then don't get in the team and come back down.

"I got Lewis Hollingsworth and James Russell at centre half now and we look really solid at the back.

"We conceded two free kicks on Saturday but in open play it didn't look like they were going to score.

"Sean started at Walton & Hersham this season then went to Guildford City but I have been after him for a long time and he finally came and carried on where he left off for Whyteleafe last year with two goals on his debut."

Despite Joe Garner's goal, the Chips were knocked out of the League Cup 2-1 by Godalming Town last night.

On Saturday, they face another relegation rival in Ashford Town (Kent) and Tompkins insisted it was important his side pushed on.

"It'a another massive game and if we beat them they are they ones playing catch up," he said.

"If we can get six points from the next two games we could be half way up the league."

Chipstead's next three matches: Nov 14 Ashford Town (a), 17 Walton Casuals (Surrey Senior Cup, h), 21 Walton & Hersham (h).
