A woman guilty of selling fake Dr Who merchandise and potentially lethal toys at Sutton's St Nicholas Centre was ordered to pay back £14,000.

Kelly Magnus, 31, of Buckles Lane, South Ockendon, Essex pleaded guilty to five consumer safety and four trading standards offences in February 2009. She was ordered to serve 300 hours community service.

In February Croydon Crown Court heard Magnus set up a short lease Christmas store in the Sutton.

A test purchase by Sutton Trading Standards officers found one 16in toy doll with filling capable of suffocating a child and a pushchair which collapsed in testing.

A BBC Worldwide representative also confirmed that Dr Who toys on sale were counterfeit.

A follow up investigation by Sutton Trading Standards found Magnus made £14,000 in assets from her criminal lifestyle.

She was ordered to pay the confiscation order money within six months and if she fails to do so, could be jailed for 12 months.

Sutton Council deputy leader Coun Colin Hall said: “This should serve as a clear warning to criminals that crime doesn’t pay. If you make money from selling fake goods we will use our powers to go after you and your assets.

“In the run up to Christmas we again urge customers to beware of cheap goods, especially children’s toys, on sale in shops that set up for short periods of time and then move on.

"What looks like a bargain in the shop could have lethal consequences for a child.”
