Disabled people who struggle to reach libraries can now access text and audio files online, thanks to a £9,900 remote download system.

Anyone with a Croydon library card and any members of Croydon College library can sign up to use the system, although Croydon Council stressed it was aimed at people who struggle to reach a physical library because of sight and hearing problems.

Members of the Croydon disability forum teamed up with the council, college and Croydon voluntary association for the blind to secure a Lottery grant for the project, which was launched by mayor Margaret Mead.

Books can be downloaded as text files to read on screen, or audio files which can be listened to on an mp3 player.
