Fallen heroes were honoured at Remembrance Day ceremonies across Merton this Sunday.
Councillor Nick Draper, the Mayor of Merton, said the services of Remembrance he attended at the War Memorial in Wimbledon Village and the Nelson Hospital in Raynes Park had drawn a “magnificent turnout” from across the community.
He said: “There were a lot of young people there - and a lot of the older people noted that. It was even better attended than in previous years.”
He also praised Territorial Army officers based at Stonecot Hill in Sutton, who helped organise the Wimbledon event, and the choir from St Mary’s Church who sang during the service.
A service of remembrance at Lower Green West in Mitcham was attended by members of the Mitcham branch of the Royal British Legion, and a service and wreath laying ceremony at St Lawrence’s Church in Morden featured cadets from the Morden 43F Air Training Corps.
Local cadets also provided the last post at the ceremony in Wimbledon.
On Wednesday morning remembrance events took place at the civic centre in Morden and Fair Green in Mitcham.
