The winning photograph of this year’s Croydon in Bloom photo competition is a striking image of an office building from an unusual perspective.

The picture, submitted by Will Armstrong was one of nearly 250 entries that were received of an extremely high standard.

It shows a striking view of one of Croydon’s many large office buildings. It caught the judges’ eyes mainly because of its optimistic outlook and vivid colours.

Councillor Steve Hollands, cabinet member for culture, said: “Croydon is a bright and colourful place.

"We have huge amounts of green space, filled with trees and flowers - but we also have a lot of excellent and vibrant architecture, which is equally worthy of attention.

“Will’s eye for symmetry and composition is great, and I think this is a worthy winner.

"That said, I know how hard the judges’ job was, because there are clearly some exceptionally good amateur photographers in Croydon.”

Mr Armstrong receives a canvas mounted print of his winning picture, courtesy of Beaumont-Wright Photography in Park Street, Croydon. He and the other winners also get vouchers for photo prints and gifts.

Speaking about the other winners, one of the judges said: "We felt that Danny McLaughlin’s carpet of pink and white flowers was a great example of the floral displays that helped Croydon’s parks scoop the Britain in Bloom award this year, and another flower picture, ‘Jemz xx’s’ garden lily, was not only a lovely composition, but also came with some great sentiments about the need for peace and understanding in the modern world.

"Brett Oliver showed huge commitment, having obviously been up very early on a very frosty morning to get his Christmas-card perfect snap of a winter sunrise, and Jo ‘Dozymoo’s bench at sunset was a picture that we thought was a subtle but effective depiction of a piece of what is otherwise just everyday park furniture.

"The dragonfly that was captured in perfect focus by Sarah Churchill-Coleman showed us not only a great deal of photographic skill, but also indicated a lot of patience - and lastly, we awarded Will Armstrong a second prize for his picture of geese, which we thought was the best of the images taken on a mobile phone camera.”
