A national debt counselling charity is set to open a branch in Surbiton to help those trapped by debt.

The announcement from Christians Against Poverty (Cap) comes at a time of unprecedented financial difficulty and means residents in the borough can benefit from free, specialist advice.

Using a combination of practical financial solutions, coupled with sensitivity to individual needs, the charity aims to bring hope to those riddled with debt worries.

Heading the centre, which was launched in partnership with Surbiton Community Church, is Peter Symmonds, who will work with all members of the local community, regardless of religious belief. Mr Symmonds said: “Being in debt is nothing to be ashamed of and I know we can work together to provide a lasting solution.”

Cap’s chief executive Matt Barlow said he was thrilled to be opening the latest centre in Surbiton to help battle the often traumatic consequences, which can include divorce, going hungry and even attempted suicide.
