Traders have criticised a transport authority’s decision to plough major road works through a busy street in the run up to Christmas.

The businesses along Ewell Road, Cheam, hit out at Transport for London for poor communication and appalling timing in starting the works, claiming it will cause them disruption and make it difficult for customers to park and goods to be delivered.

MP for Sutton and Cheam Paul Burstow said St Dunstan’s Primary school would also be affected by plans to close Anne Boleyn’s Walk temporarily at its junctions with the Ewell Road.

He said: “TfL bosses have failed to consult the school and traders.

“That means they have not planned their works with the school or traders in mind.

“Business is hard at the moment, so major road works have to be very carefully planned and timed to accommodate businesses, to make sure no harm is done to trade.”

A TfL spokesman said: “TfL is now installing a new crossing for both pedestrians and cyclists along the A232 Ewell Road, near the junction with Ann Boleyn’s Walk.

“While these works are being done, both Park Lane and Ann Boleyn’s Walk will be closed at their junctions with Ewell Road.

“Drivers needing to access these roads will still be able to via The Broadway and Station Way.

“Work is due to be completed by the end of this year.”
