A mum-of-three who survived cervical cancer while pregnant with twins had the help of the Butterfly Room to live through her ordeal.

Michelle Stepney, from Cheam, underwent chemotherapy while the babies were still in the womb and she and husband Scott wondered if the twins, or mum, would survive.

During that difficult time, Mrs Stepney received counselling at the Butterfly Room in Epsom, which helped her battle the disease and give birth to her two daughters, Alice and Harriet.

Mrs Stepney said: “When I was initially diagnosed I had to deal with some difficult choices and it was all very difficult.

"I was told about the Butterfly Room, in Epsom, and it became my new lease of life.

"I did some meditation there it made me stop being nervous and start relaxing during the pregnancy. It helped me deal with the cancer and the pain.

“It was important to have a centre like this and have people I could talk to.

“Sometimes you can’t talk to your family and friends, so you need other people who can listen to you.”

“It would be great to have a Butterfly Room in Sutton because sometimes because of the chemo, you can’t really drive or go far.”

Her treatment was a success and Michelle ended up giving birth to the two healthy girls receiving the all-clear from the deadly disease.

Residents are still digging into their pockets and doing fundraisers to help our Operation Butterfly, to create a Butterfly Room in St Helier Hospital, a cancer information and support centre.
