Kingston’s tumbling telephone boxes are set to become an Olympic icon after they were chosen to represent the borough on a London Landmark pin badge.
Londoners chose the sculpture from a shortlist for each of the capital’s boroughs, and it will join Richmond Park, Battersea Power Station and the Globe Theatre among the 33 badges.
David Mach created the work of art, which is made of disused red telephone boxes tipped against one another, in 1988 for the new relief road.
Local artist Patrick Blower said: “I think it is a good work of art in a cartoony kind of way, and a witty take on a familiar landmark. My only criticism is it does not have anything to do with Kingston.”
The pin badges will go on sale next year.
