A veteran member of Sutton Runners Club is no nearer the end of the road as he prepares for his 200th marathon next month.

Jim “Manic” Mundy, 58, will have the number 200 emblazoned on his vest when he pounds through the New Forest on September 27.

Since notching up his 100th race in 2007, the London Ambulance Service worker has run 26.3 miles for recreation each weekend.

His endurance feats this year have included completing the Nashville Country Music Marathon in blazing temperatures, while dressed as a serf.

Jim said: “Running all these marathons makes me feel on top of the world.

"Both members of the 100 Marathon Club and Sutton Runners have made the journey really enjoyable and I've made some great friends.”

Barbara Burnett, a fellow member of Sutton Runners, said: “Since his 100th marathon in 2007, Jim has not slackened his pace, completing 32 marathons at the end of that year.

“In 2008 he ran only 51 because Luton was cancelled in icy weather, but this included the Brathay Challenge of 10 marathons in 10 days for the second consecutive year, and his first 100km race in Belgium.

“At the end of his busiest year, although disappointed by being denied the magic total of 52 marathons, Jim had enjoyed running the original 1908 London Olympic course, dressed as his hero Dorando Pietri, and had a total of 159 marathons, or ultra-marathons, to his name.”

Jim retired prematurely in 2003, after 21 marathons, but was inspired to keep going the distance after being given the nickname Manic by his colleague Jack Brooks.

The marathon man still has thousands more miles to cover if he is to challenge the world record for multiple races.

Horst Preisler, a 74-year-old German, had successfully completed 1,214 marathons, plus 347 ultra-marathons, two years ago.
