Green-minded residents snapped up discounted loft insulation rolls offered by the council thanks to the Sutton Guardian.

All 5,000 rolls of insulation available for just £1 each, under the Warmfront Scheme, have now been sold to residents, after the Guardian reported only a few residents had taken up the offer in June.

Sutton Council sold the rolls to 190 homes, which should have cheaper energy bills from autumn.

The offer was part of the council’s promotion of One Planet Living, an initiative that encourages people to change their lifestyles and live within their fair share of the earth’s resources.

The insulation was bought under a deal with B&Q who have also adopted the One Planet Living scheme.

Councillor Ruth Dombey, deputy leader of Sutton Council, said: “Small changes in our lifestyles can lead to big reductions in the natural resources, like gas and coal we use.

“If we are to halt climate change and protect the environment, these are changes we need to make.

“That includes cutting the amount of energy we use at home. Installing loft insulation is the simplest and cheapest way of doing this.

“I’m delighted 190 homes took advantage of this offer and, in doing their bit for the environment, will cut hundreds of pounds off their energy bills too.”

One Planet Living is an initiative by the charity BioRegional, based at BedZed in Hackbridge. Their studies, including a measurement called ecological footprinting, show if everyone in the world consumed as many natural resources as Sutton residents we would need three planets to support us.
