On Tuesday night, just as David Hunt was launching one of his Rory Delap-esque long throws, I turned to my brother and exclaimed: “I wish we’d stop using this bloody tactic.”

Except, I might have used a slightly more colourful word than “bloody”.

I think the reason behind my ire was more than justified.

Since Hunt has arrived at Brentford, we have struggled in vain to profit from this most direct of tactics.

Countless times he has chucked the ball deep into opponents’ penalty areas, only too see giant centre-halves nonchalantly nod the ball away every time.

Unlike Tony Pulis’ anti-footballing team Stoke City, Brentford have not been designed to capitalise on such an uncompromising approach, and the frustration boiled over as I vented at my brother.

Whether it was divine intervention, a simple twist of fate or the fact that Norwich City’s defence is shoddier than Phil Spector’s I don’t know but, just as the rant left my mouth, Ryan Dickson leapt like 10 Lords at Christmas to meet Hunty’s throw with a firm header that flew into the back of the Norwich net.

So there you have it – what the hell do I know? (Don’t answer that, thanks). Long live the Hunty Hurl!

The goal set us on our way to a deserved victory and (prepare to be amazed at what you are about to read) Karleigh Osborne deserves a special mention for his sterling performance.

When Alan Bennett limped off, I could not have been the only Brentford supporter thinking we were in big trouble.

Try as I might, I can never seem to shake the extreme tension that envelopes my body whenever a ball drops anywhere near Osborne but, after his customary shaky start, he settled down and, along with Phillips, did an excellent job in marking that rotund, whining, bully-boy Grant Holt out of the game.

Hopefully, this will be the season that sees Osborne cut out the stupid mistakes and fulfil his undoubted potential.

However, he may be made to wait for his next chance in the first team.

Andy Scott says he is planning to bring in another defender to bolster the squad – by the time you are reading this, he may have already done it.

So despite his excellent showing against Norwich, Osborne could well find himself back on the bench by the weekend.

If the rumours are true and it is James Wilson stepping in to take his place, then no one, Karleigh included, will have too much cause for complaint.
