A drink-drive teenager who turned up at court wearing a black T-shirt with the logo “Yeah, Yeah. Whatever” has been given a year-long driving ban after also admitting having no insurance or licence.

Ryan McGonigle, 18, unleashed a torrent of foul-mouthed abuse at police officers who arrested him for driving his black Fiat “erratically” around the one-way system in Kingston town centre, Kingston Magistrates’ Court heard on Tuesday.

The red-faced teenager gave a false name at first but, when officers found his provisional licence and realised he had no insurance, he told them to “go and arrest some real criminals”.

McGonigle had consumed enough booze to have 86mg of alcohol in 100ml in his breath.

In his defence, the court heard despite his guilty plea he still did not accept he was driving erratically.

His defence counsel said: “He had been out with friends to a bar and agreed to drive home not believing he was over the limit.

“He tried to turn around and before he knew it he was on the one way system. He is from Feltham and he is unaware of the area so accepts he was driving cautiously but not erratically.

“He accepts he had two glasses of spirits.”

McGonigle was disqualified for 12 months and ordered to pay £100 for drink-driving, £100 for having no insurance or full driving licence, £80 for court costs and £15 victim surcharge and was told he could reduce his ban if he went on a drink-driving course.
