A former Coombe Girls’ School pupil who stole from Tesco has been sent to a young offenders’ institute.

Cindy Smith, 20, of Lapwing Court, Tolworth, admitted filling a Tesco trolley with £402.83 worth of goods and attempting to steal them on August 1.

She also missed a meeting with probation and was sentenced to a total of 12 weeks in a young offenders’ institute, with 15 days credit for time already served.

She was the third Kaleidoscope client to come through Kingston Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday for petty theft.

Niamh Donnelly, Kaleidoscope’s drug services manager, said the charity was trying to wean people away from illegal drugs but there were some lapses.

She said: “If someone is addicted to an illicit substance the chances are they are going to do something to get money to pay for them.

“We are working very hard to help people keep safe and away from criminality.

“By engaging people in methadone consumption you are reducing their need to take illicit drugs.”
