Rail users from Kingston and Surbiton are still being fleeced by South West Trains, despite last week’s announcement rail fares will drop in January, according to local MP Edward Davey.

Current regulation means rail companies can only increase fares by 1 per cent more than inflation, and with the Government’s preferred RPI measure standing at -1.4 per cent in July, prices are set to fall from the start of 2010.

But Mr Davey said South West Trains’ decision to place Kingston and Surbiton stations in zone six rather than zone five means passengers are still suffering from unreasonably high fares.

Both stations are only 12 miles from the capital, meaning 23 stations in zone five are further away from their London terminus.

He said: “Even if fares don’t rise next year, commuters from Kingston and Surbiton are still being fleeced.

“Passengers paying hundreds of pounds too much every year.

“The recent campaign continues, though even with the help of Boris Johnson we have still a long way to go.

“I’ve recently met officers from the Department for Transport, and was pleased that they at least listened to the strength of our case.

“Yet the critical player in rezoning remains South West Trains.”
