A date may have not been set for the next general election but work began this week to make sure people can vote.
Electoral registration forms are being posted out over the coming weeks to add voters to the electoral register.
Councillors will be chosen at local elections on May 6, 2010, while a general election could come any time before June.
Voters need to complete the form they receive or, if no changes need to be made, details can be confirmed by telephone, internet or text message.
Karen Quaintmere, head of electoral administration for the electoral commission, said: “If you’re not registered to vote, then you can’t make a decision about who represents you in Westminster or on Kingston Council.
"Secure your voice on the issues that matter to you now. It only takes a few minutes.”
