A band from Putney have been tipped to become global superstars after being named sixth in an NME poll that predicts which musical acts will make it big in 2010.

The XX, who all met at Elliot School, are described by NME’s new music editor Jaimie Hodgson as a “very, very significant band offering a soundtrack to London”.

The NME Future 50 List rates acts and innovators from around the world who are driving music forward.

At number four on the list and also the top UK entry is Dizzee Rascal.

The list, which is topped by hyper-fashionable US band Animal Collective, was compiled by the magazine after polling their contributors and staff writers for acts who “are driving the music scene forward and inspiring people".

Mr Hodgson said: “London has always been a hugely influential metropolis of creativity and has always had a huge effect on the progression and development of music. This list shows that case in point.”

In 2008, The NME Future 50 correctly identified some of the biggest and most exciting innovators that went on to enjoy major success.

Controversial US singer Lady GaGa came in at a lowly 36th.
