The people of Roehampton have an unusual connection with the Kennedy Presidential dynasty after it was revealed the sister of former US president John F Kennedy was educated in the borough.

Eunice Kennedy Shriver, aged 88, died last week at Cape Cod Hospital, in Massachusettes, surrounded by her husband, five children, and 19 grandchildren.

Mrs Kennedy Shriver, the daughter of Joseph Kennedy Sr and Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy, spent time in Roehampton in the 1930s.

Born on July 10, 1921, as the fifth of nine children, Eunice Mary Kennedy was also the sister of President John F. Kennedy and Senator Robert F. Kennedy.

She moved to England in the early 1930s and was educated at the Convent of the Sacred Heart in Roehampton, before attending Stanford University where she earned a degree in social science/social thought.

On May 23, 1953, Eunice Kennedy married Robert Shriver Jr at St Patrick's Cathedral on 5th Avenue in New York City.

Her daughter, Maria Shriver, is married to actor and politician Arnold Schwarzenegger.

She was perhaps best known for creating the Special Olympics and her tireless work with the Peace Corps.

Mrs Kennedy Shriver is survived by her husband Robert, her brother Senator Edward Kennedy, her sister Jean Kennedy Smith, her five children and 19 grandchildren.

Her family said in a statement: "She was the light of our lives, a mother, wife, grandmother, sister and aunt who taught us by example and with passion what it means to live a faith-driven life of love and service to others."
