The Wandsworth Guardian’s wildlife expert Tony Drakeford praised the winners of the Wandle Valley Festival Art Competition at an award ceremony last Thursday.

Children were asked to draw or paint their favourite wildlife scene and Mr Drakeford and Neil Churchill, general manager of the Southside centre in Wandsworth Town, where the pictures were displayed, were the judges.

Five-year-old Mia Fitzpatrick, who attends Granard Primary School in Putney, won in the eight-and-under category.

Mr Drakeford said: “Her picture showed imagination, observation, colour and movement.”

In the nine-15 age group Alina Asit’s picture impressed the judges.

Mr Drakeford said the 11-year-old, who attends Burntwood School in Tooting, was a worthy winner.

He said: "The picture drew you in, it was well drawn and again showed movement and colour.”

He added: “The competition focused the children’s minds on the river Wandle, keeping it clean and looking after the environment.”

Both winners received a digital camera.
