Solo pianist Guy Pearson stops off at the Rose Theatre for a one-off gig this week – just do not go expecting a run-of-the-mill recital.

The Mansfield musician has made his name by penning numerous works used in TV, film and advertising, along with releasing a handful of albums.

But if there is one thing guaranteed, it is that the Rose date will throw up something slightly out of the ordinary.

Pearson explains: “I always improvise on stage and I have always wanted to improvise.

“Right from when I was a very young age, I never really studied music as I always wanted to do my own thing.

“I never wanted to play what was given to me and that has carried through to present day.

“My grandfather was a professional pianist so music was always around my family.

“I just took to it quite naturally – if there was a piano in the room I would just play it.

“I really want to get my own work recognised, as there are simply not that many pieces that can accomodate my style. I have my own agenda and that has served me well so far.”

Pearson will be joined by Australian guest soprano Emma Pettemerides for the concert, which is likely to touch on pieces from his recent album, Somewhere Across The Water, as well as his interpretations of work by Phillip Glass and Randy Newman.

And there may even be a sneak peek at recently completed material penned for group Delerium.

Pearson adds: “That was a really good little project.

“They wanted an acoustic version of their tracks and we finished the album last week.

“It was great to work on and I am hoping it leads to even further opportunities.”
