An eco heating system - the first of its kind in the country - is set to be installed on a Lambeth estate.

The “condensing” combined heat and power plant extracts heat that would otherwise be lost from waste gases to heat the water used to warm up peoples' homes.

The energy efficient system will be used to provide heating and hot water on the Roupell estate in Brixton Hill.

While it is heating water to be pumped into homes, it will generate and harness hundreds of kilowatts of electricity - tackling climate change by cutting carbon emissions.

Its designers say for every hour it is running, it will generate 500kw of electricity which is then sold back to the national grid.

Lambeth Living say the extra money will be used to help fund projects and services in the borough.
