Sutton is a great places to live but few people say they influence decision making and crime is still a top priority, a survey has revealed.

Results from the Place Survey show 80.3 per cent are satisfied with the area as a place to live compared with 74.9 per cent in London.

A further 83 per cent said their their health was good or very good.

However, 14 per cent have been involved in local decision-making in the past 12 months with only 30.5 per cent agreeing that they could influence decisions.

Those who see drunk or rowdy behaviour as a problem stands at 24 per cent with 20.8 per cent believing antisocial behaviour is a problem.

However, crime is still a top priority for Sutton residents, who also want to see more activities for teenagers and a reduction in the level of traffic congestion.

Conservative leader Paul Scully said there were some encouraging results but room for improvement.

He said: “Before Lib Dem-run Sutton Council engages in all-round general backslapping, they should reflect on the fact that Sutton’s residents feel distant from their council and unable to influence council decisions, according to the survey.

“In this area Sutton has some of the poorest results out of all of the 33 London boroughs.”

Results of the survey, which was carried out last autumn, also show almost nine in 10, or 83.4 per cent, of older people aged 65 and over are satisfied with their homes and neighbourhood, more than the London average of 77.

A further 70.6 per cent said they had been treated with respect and consideration by public services in the last year.

Leader of Sutton Council Sean Brennan said: “There are some very encouraging results in the survey but it also shows us that there is still a lot of work to do.

“Responding to surveys like this is just one of the ways people can influence the services they receive.

“We need to make sure we respond to people’s priorities and provide excellent services at the right price.”
