A multimillion pound housing estate in Epsom officially opens on Thursday.

Pelman Way, which was recently visited by the south east regional minister Jonathan Shaw, consists of 21 shared ownership homes, 34 homes to rent and 15 homes for sale.

It is the latest Epsom development to be completed by the Rosebery Housing Association and more homes are on the way.

When Mr Shaw visited Epsom he toured the sites of three former psychiatric hospitals, West Park, St Ebba’s and Horton.

More than 750 homes, 40 per cent of them affordable, are being constructed or will be constructed on the sites.

He was promoting a UK wide government £1 billion package to stimulate house building activity and produce more homes, all of them energy efficient.

Seventy homes are nearing completion on the Horton retail site along with 600 sq metres of retail space. It will provide a much needed centre for the Epsom cluster.

The affordable housing is managed by Rosebery Housing Association who will also be responsible for the affordable housing on the other two sites.

St Ebba’s Hospital was granted planning permission for 322 units in October 2008. The demolition of a large part of the site has already taken place and the construction of the first show homes is underway.

The site of West Park Hospital will produce 360 new homes, 33 per cent of them affordable.

A large number of these new homes will be in converted hospital buildings and the remainder will be new build units.

A hotel and conference centre is also planned and the proposed site for them is being marketed Rosebery Housing Association development director, David Bayliss, said “We are delighted to have been involved in a project that will deliver much needed, high quality, affordable housing in the borough.”
