While some of its clientele will be pumping iron others could be more interested in pumping beer if a new licence is granted for a Ewell gym.

A gym could serve alcohol from 6.30am until 1am and stay open until 2am every night of the week at LA Fitness in Ruxley Lane.

Almost 60 people have lodged objections to the application from the club to vary its licence.

However the bar manager, Tony Millard said he has no intention of running an all day and late night boozing club.

He said: “I am shocked so many people have objected. I think there is a misunderstanding over what we want to do.”

The club is applying for a variation of the licence which would allow him to extend the hours in which he can sell alcohol, would allow him to sell late night refreshments and to stay open until 2am each day.

The application also calls for permission to play live or recorded music from 6.30am until 1am on Mondays to Fridays and from 8am until 1am at the weekends both inside and outside the club.

Letters object to the proposal on the grounds they have already been subjected to noise nuisance and anti social behaviour by people leaving the club.

A letter of objection from the council’s environmental department has been lodged with the licensing section claiming local people would suffer more noise nuisance if outside entertainment was permitted.

Surrey Police has also lodged two representations with the council calling on for the club bar staff to undergo regular training and for any customers who appeared to be under 21 to produce photo ID.

LA Fitness in Banstead Road, Ewell, invited its neighbours in last Saturday to join in a fun day and barbecue to raise money for the Help for Heroes charity.

A decision will be made at Epsom and Ewell’s licensing hearing sub committee on Monday, July 13.
